The Brethren Assemblies

EN  Versiunea in limba romana

The Brethren Assemblies are known under the name as "Christian Cult after Gospel". These churches are spread throughout country in number of 650 of churches having 50.000 of members.

At the end of 19 th century, this movement strated with the visit of English missioner called Broadbent in our country,. He was very aware of the Romanian`s desire to read and to study more deeply the Word of God. Impressed by their responsiveness, at his return to England, he wrote an article in a missionary magazine in which he challenged young missionaries to come in Romania. Thus in October 1899, it will take place the opening of the first Brethren Assembly, as a result of missionary work of Swiss: François Berney and Charles Aubert.

In these assemblies they read the Bible, they explained the Word of God, they sang Christians hymns and they raised prayers toward God.
The joy of discovering the biblical message helps the setting up of this kind of assemblies in many places.

From 1906 the foreign missionaries are expelled from the country, the Christians are beaten, but in spite of all these God did continuing to bless His work, thus from 1921 the Romanians Christians had a Bible translated in their own language, which is available even today.

After 1925 the Brethren Assemblies from Romania formed a "Religious Association of Christian Cult after Gospel" which it will be recognized by the government in 1928. During the Second World War, in Romania there were 350 of Assemblies, and over 15.000 of Christians members. But the government closed up all the assemblies and many Christians were condemned to prison for many years.

The communist government which was established in country, in 1945 recognized the Assemblies named by "Christian Cult after Gospel", but after 1960 will reduce to the half the number of these assemblies and it will start a policy of intimidation and persecution. The young people are marginalized, the specialists could not be hire in leading positions and politically many people are sued.

The communist state introduced a structure of monopolization and censorship for all church`s activities.
In this situation appeared the underground activity which is an activity of consolidation and spiritually growing, especially for the generation that was indoctrinated in atheist philosophic schools.

After 1989 when the communist system had fallen, our assemblies experienced an explosive growth in number of members and also in the number of churches. In the 2000 year the total number of churches is 650 and over 50.000 of Christians.

In the present, the Divinity Institute functions in this cult, which is on University`s level and also there are many others biblical schools for training workers for Christ. The Union is publishining a magazine named "The Path of Faith" that reflects the life of Christians and the principles which guide them.

The relation between State and Union is accomplished by Brethren Union, which is formed by a Committee Executive and a Board Consultative, but the superior leading form is Brethren Council over country.
